The Viking Look

Okay, I know I’m not the only one who switches the TV on to ‘Vikings’ every Thursday night and see how much of a potato I am compared to Lagertha. I mean, come on! She’s the ex-wife of King Ragnar, a shield maiden and an earl. She is also a strong mother with killer style. Literally. For those of us who are not as lucky to pull off a feminine and intimidating look, let’s put together an affordable look that can give us that edge; the Viking Look.

Wearing dark colors in earthy tones keeps you in tune with nature, and gives you an effortless look, especially when you are going on raids (or to the grocery store). Layering is a must, as shield maidens wore some protective armor layering above their clothes. Try cable-knit sweaters and cardigans, as they can give some sort of a chainmail armored look. Boots are also a must have, but if the weather is warm, sandals would work great.

I am also not telling you that wielding an axe around is a good idea, but we can pretend that you carry one inside a handbag or shoulder bag of your choice. Working with the same earthy colors won’t overwhelm the whole look. And if you have fur, faux fur, or grizzly looking scarves, gloves, bags and belts, this is a great time to put them to use.

Intricate hairstyles that symbolize bravery and power are popular among viking women, so going with multiple braids and teased hair with a matte, roughed up texture is the way to go. Experiment with different hairstyles to see which one compliments your overall look and makes you look intimidating, but feminine at the same time.

In terms of makeup, I would not recommend getting into a brawl and painting your face in dirt and blood. Instead, go for a hazy smokey eye in brown and grey tones for a daytime look, and add a touch of olive and black for a nighttime look. Add a touch of a rosy blush on the apples of the cheeks for a natural flush, like you have been hiking up onto the shores of Northumbria for days. Lips can stay a natural color, such as a peachy nude. If you want to go for blood, apply a lip stain on the inner part of your lips to create a gradient look. It will be your pop of color, as compared to the dark, neutral tones of the whole head-to-toe look.
